special_reports japanese beetle control in Denver - (090626) neem oil - an experiment to find the least toxic control. READ AND FOLLOW LABEL INSTRUCTIONS ON YOUR NEEM OIL PRODUCT monitor: starting late may / early june tiny japanese beetles emerge in numbers with gold flecks in two rows on their backs (especially where water may puddle or around hardscapes) control preparation: mow, blow and/or rake lawn (rake planted garden plots) water prior to application blow or sun dry foliage but don't allow soil to dry up neem application: apply neem near dawn or dusk to avoid harming active bee's apply 70% - 100% neem @ 2oz/gal (s/b warm and agitated) 1 gal to 300sf lawn area apply neem with pump sprayer primarily as foliar kill though it may drench somewhat to kill root feeding critters. neem kills eggs of beetles, ALSO eggs of earthworms, and maybe beneficials - (who knows to what extent) - probably will not penetrate soil though very deeply at this application rate monitor weekly for effectiveness and re-apply as needed (if effectiveness was notable) Personal Note: soil drenches and other methods of control i have looked at seem to me to be either ineffective, impractical, or toxic to beneficials and / or environment. your comments are appreciated: send to dlbassman@groundskeeper4hire.com respectfully, donald bassman dlb icon
